Day 90 of Campaign Smile found me making a brief stop at the grocery store for a little campaigning and to pick up a couple “essentials.” A lot of the experience was similar to other stops, though every interaction is always unique. It’s important to remember that when we are out mingling with our fellow humans. Even if that person looks like someone you know, acts like someone else or falls into some stereotype you have, every one of us is unique in many different ways. Don’t look to find the common aspects of that person that match with something that you know. Look to find what makes them different. If that woman looks like your grandma don’t stop there. Look to see what sets her apart. We were all made differently for a reason so enjoy it, embrace it.
1. The first person I engaged with my ready smile was a woman standing near the meat case talking on her phone. She looked at me, studied me for a moment and then looked away, still engrossed in her call.
2. Immediately after, I passed a short, older woman. She had a tremendous smile that she revealed. It really lifted her entire face and seemed to wrap itself around all her features.
3. A female employee rolling some sort of cabinet toward me responded to my smile by simply staring at me.
4. The best interaction was, by far, the cashier. She was a very nice young lady with a smile ready to exchange with me. She looked at my purchases of ice cream and blue cheese and smiled again as she asked me if I was planning on putting the cheese in the ice cream. I dropped the smile and looked directly at her asking, “you don’t think that sounds good?” Her smile dropped even faster than mine and she looked stunned as she asked, “are you serious?” I just cracked up laughing and told her no but the look on her face was well worth the effort. It was very comical and we both enjoyed a good laugh, even better than the exchange of smiles.
I had a great smile campaign stop and gathered 2 more smiles. That means the total is now 292. We are scratching and clawing our way to the 300 mark but we’ll get there and far beyond. Keep smiling!
