On the 82nd day of Campaign Smile I visited a music shop. It was easy to see that various circumstances were draining everyone’s energy this Saturday evening. Some seemed to be victim to work, some to shopping and others to family obligations. Here’s how it panned out…
1. As I walked in one of the employees said hi and asked me how I was, but it was obvious his heart was not in it. He sounded as if he was close to dropping from exhaustion so I hope his day improved.
2. I passed another shopper who simply stared right through me. I’m not even sure he actually saw me. He seemed to be miles away. Perhaps my smile registered with him somehow anyway and he was benefitted by it.
3. Further along a couple with several children, one in a stroller, moved like zombies. I don’t know how much of their apparent weariness was from shopping and how much was from keeping up with their young ones. I do hope, though, that something made its way through to give them a boost to help them keep going.
4. A second employee walked past me concentrating on staring straight ahead and not making eye contact. He watched me pass out of the corner of his eye as if he was just trying to avoid having to speak to another person. It must have been a rough day so I hope it will be the last one for a while for him.
I actually received not one smile today which could be seen as unfortunate. I think, though, that if everyone was smiling on their own or easily started doing so with a smile from another then there would not be the need for efforts such as mine. As it is, the total smiles for the campaign still stands at 260.
