On Day 79 of Campaign Smile I went hunting for a small business for my campaign stop. Unfortunately, they are getting harder to find these days. Hopefully, that will be changing soon, but as I walked down one of the older business rows which has always been occupied by small businesses I found few. It’s not that the larger chains have driven them out and taken over, at least not there. There were numerous buildings sitting empty and some that still seemed to be in business but were, mysteriously, closed on a Wednesday afternoon. I finally selected a small antique shop. I’ve found a few of those so it must be a good niche these days….
1. As I walked in the shop I passed a blonde woman with an expressionless face. I can’t actually say that she was frowning or scowling. She simply revealed no emotion at all and that did not change when I tossed a smile her way.
2. The gentleman working the shop greeted me with no smile and I could see the need for my efforts.
3. I worked my way to the back of the small store and was heading back to the front when I encountered a brunette woman who was there with the blonde woman. She did smile, though it was a tight-lipped smile.
4. As I was heading to the door, thinking I had seen the whole place the man I met earlier caught me to make sure I knew there were more items upstairs. This time he did have a small smile so maybe I was helping him a little. The upstairs was interesting because it was obviously a converted apartment. Apparently this man, or whoever the owner was, felt the display space was more important than a place to live in or rent out over the shop. It was an interesting layout and experience though I found no other smiles there.
