Wrapping Up The Work Day

On this 51st day of Campaign Smile I accidentally landed my campaign stop at a store due to close in fifteen minutes.  I usually try to pay attention to closing times so I am not keeping anyone past the time for them to go home.  I just had it in my head that they would be open for another hour and didn’t even look at the times on the door.

1. I should have realized my mistake when I saw mostly employees and few customers but hindsight is 20/20, as they say.  The first employee I passed looked as worn down as you might expect at the end of the day and it was all he could do to respond to my smile with a small nod.  I hope the interaction helped give him at least a small energy boost for the end of the day.

2. After the p.a. system announced the impending closing of the store and I realized my error I quickly put my shopping basket back and headed for the door.  The man standing watch at the exit, possibly the manager, stared for several extended seconds at my smile, resisting responding to me.  Finally, he smiled, almost in spite of himself as I reached the door.  That was a nice boost for me too.

3. As soon as I stepped outside I realized I had left my notepad that documents my campaign stops in the basket so I hurried back in to retrieve it.  As I made my way toward it I passed a third employee who, like the first, managed a small nod, ready to end his shift.

With 1 more smile and 1 more from the comments the total stands at 166.  Don’t forget there are only 2 weeks left in the James Dean Contest.  Get entered now.
