On this 41st day of Campaign Smile I hit a torrential rain storm between work and my campaign stop. As I mentioned before I love the rain though a lot of people have trouble driving in it. It’s an exhilarating challenge, to be sure. When I reached the grocery store I decided to simply sit in the car and wait a few minutes for the storm to pass. As soon as it let up I cheerfully headed for the front door and passed a large contingent of dismayed shoppers huddled under the overhang of the strip mall with their purchases. There were no smiles to be seen in that group. Guess they don’t enjoy rain. Do you? Why or why not?
1. Immediately upon entering I met an employee who cheerfully granted me a great smile of her own to meet mine. I think she was very happy to be stuck inside while the customers were scurrying in and out of the rain.
2. In short order I came upon a mother hustling around grabbing things and filling the shopping cart. Meanwhile, her husband and the kids waited with the cart. She never even noticed me. The husband, however, was the calm opposite to his frantic wife and granted me a serene smile. He was clearly enjoying the moment, whatever great reason he might have had.
3. As I passed him, a middle-aged man popped out of one of the coolers in the frozen food section with his conquest. He looked up and gave me a small smile.
4. As soon as I reached the front of the line the cashier gave me a warm, genuine smile. She kept it the whole time she was ringing up my purchases and I thought it was nice to believe that she really enjoyed her role there enough to have that smile on, no matter what she was doing. That is the type of person shoppers like to see more of. It makes for a great stop on the smile campaign.
