I took my smile campaign to the library today. Day 29 of Campaign Smile was beautiful so I made sure to keep the visit inside brief to get back to the great weather.
1. As my wife, my niece and I began to cross one of the driving lanes in the parking lot a nice gentleman in a truck stopped for us and waved us across. I smiled at his consideration, since you often have to force drivers to respect the pedestrians. He was patient and seemed content to wait for us even if my niece was not running and pulling my wife with her. There was no smile to accompany his kindness but I know the experience made an impact.
2. We then passed a mother and her teenage daughter as they were leaving the library. I beamed my best smile to no avail with the mother. She felt it, though, I am sure. Her daughter granted us a repressed smile. I love when people try so hard to keep their happiness contained so it doesn’t spill out in big toothy smiles and laughter. At least I know those positive emotions are bubbling inside and generating future results.
3. As we left the library a serious businessman with his cellphone ear bud firmly planted in his ear walked quickly toward us. He returned my smile with a relieved one of his own. My guess is he had one of those days where you really appreciate the little kindnesses such as a smile from an as yet unknown friend.
My short campaign stop netted me 2 more smiles, bringing the total to 79!
